Training

Training begins when the clocks go forward each spring and ends with the event itself. Sesssions run every Monday (running) and every Wednesday (cycling) at 7pm, meeting by the Pavilion in Clift Meadow, Bramley. While most sessions focus on on- or off-road routes, we also include speedwork and hill sessions to keep things interesting. This year we're also having a special evening to welcome along Iron Mums' children, with a special warm-up and fun activities, to give them a taste of the Iron Mum experience!

Beginners are very welcome, our beginners' programme assumes absolutely no previous experience, but we aim to challenge you whatever your level of fitness. Sessions are led by an England Athletics-qualified coach. We look forward to seeing you!

Training FAQs
What should I wear?
For running: top/t-shirt and leggings/tracksuit bottoms/shorts, trainers (ideally fitted by specialist running shop, to suit your running style), and hi-vis vest. Don't forget the most important item of all: sports bra!
For cycling: top/t-shirt and leggings/shorts (no baggy trousers which will catch in your chain), trainers, hi-vis vest.

What should I bring?
For running: you don't need to bring anything except yourself, but you might want to bring along a bottle of water especially on warm evenings.
For cycling: helmet, lights and lock. (And bike, obviously...)

What if it rains?

Then we get wet! Training goes ahead no matter what the weather, and you get extra Iron Mum credibility points for turning up in the rain!

What should I expect?
We start the evening with a group warm-up and dynamic stretches. For running, we then divide into three groups (beginner, intermediate and advanced), each with a leader and back-marker. Beginners follow a gentle progressive programme of walk/run, while intermediate and advanced runners will increase the distance gradually over the summer with sessions on speed work and hills to improve fitness and technique. At the end we stretch and cool down together.
At the end of each term there's an optional 5km timed run, so that you can see just how much progress you make over the summer - these are always followed by a restorative trip to the pub!

What if I can't keep up?
There are three six-week 'terms' of Iron Mum training: beginners are welcome at the start of each, and anyone's welcome to stay a beginner as long as they wish! No matter how slow you think you are, we'll make sure there's a group for you.

Why should I come along?
Iron Mum is the most accessible, friendly way to get fit we know, and it's free! There's no pressure, and you're not competing against anyone but yourself, but you will be amazed by what you can achieve over just a few months. You have nothing to lose except a few pounds, and so much to gain.
But don't take our word for it, see what other Iron Mums have to say!
